Priya Aggarwal: An 18 year old fashion influencer has her own clothing brand

It’s not easy to achieve something that you have dreamt of since childhood at a stage in your life when you are still an adolescent. But this is precisely what Priya Aggarwal did. It was her childhood dream to own a fashion brand. She had her priorities set when she was only in 5th grade, and that is to become a fashion designer.  And now, at the ripe age of 18, Priya has become a fashion influencer and stylist with over 63k followers on her Instagram page and launched a fashion styling company called WAL.

 With that being said, Priya revealed that the main reason why she is an influencer now was for her childhood dream. She was well aware that being a fashion influencer would help her promote her future clothing brand to a mass number of people. And since then, the journey started.

In November of 2015, when she was only 14, Priya started her first blog, where she shared various aspects of fashion from creating simple outfits to talking about androgynous style. Also, she mentions that it was a post about androgynous fashion that went viral and captured various people’s attention. “People always love controversial topics, and those are the ones that go viral,” adds Priya. In the initial days, she stuck to fashion topics but eventually ventured to the beauty area. “They both really just go hand in hand, and it was what my audience wanted,” she says.

For a short period, Priya did go to college after getting a fashion scholarship, but now all her focus is on growing her brand. She launched it in the early days of January in 2020 and is now working on venturing into design. WAL offers various services from fashion consultation, personal styling to personal shopping. Although Priya currently doesn’t have a professional team, she gets help from her friends and sister.

In July of 2016, she and her sister created a blog called Sisters Journal. Priya believes that it’s always fruitful in doing something together rather than alone. In that blog, these two sisters provided different perspectives to their audience. “It was at this point that my audience grew, we went to different events and had collaborations lined up!” she recollects.

“THERE IS NO RECIPE FOR VIRAL CONTENT. IT WILL ALWAYS BE HIT AND TRIAL. IT IS THE IDEA OF BEING DIFFERENT YET RELATABLE THAT PEOPLE LOVE. THEY WANT TO LOOK AT SOMEONE WHO IS LIKE THEIR FRIEND, BUT THEN THEY ALWAYS WANT TO GET NEW INFORMATION”

The key to growing and gaining attention from your audiences is by providing value to your audience while also being real with them. Priya explains that before she used to make everything look perfect. But now she prefers being true to her audience, even if it’s something as little as showing a bare face without any makeup. Although she indulges in trend once in a while, Priya is more into discovering your own aesthetic than following trends. “The idea is simply to wear whatever you want. And so I like to make everyday clothes look aesthetic,” she further adds.

“TV COMMERCIALS AND BILLBOARDS CAN ONLY MAKE YOUR PRODUCT VISIBLE TO THE PEOPLE. HOWEVER, WHEN AN INFLUENCER SHARES THEIR IDEAS AND OPINIONS ON A CERTAIN BRAND AND THEIR PRODUCTS, IT MAKES A HUGE IMPACT ON THE IMAGE OF THAT BRAND”

Influencer marketing has completely changed the dynamic of the way brands market their products. Priya brings light into the fact that people will be more inclined to buy a product if their trusted influencer uses it and recommends it rather than seeing an advertisement of it on TV and Billboards.” Billboards are vague, while influencer marketing is targeted,” she says.

She has worked for both International and Indian brands, but she likes working for a good cause more. Priya recollects one such campaign that she did with Mahindra group, where they gave salutes to the martyrs of the Pulwama attack on 14th February, with a rose.

“MY BIGGEST CHALLENGE TILL NOW HAS BEEN MANAGING MY TIME. JUGGLING A BUSINESS, EDUCATION, AND BEING A CONTENT CREATOR AT THE AGE OF 18 IS NO DOUBT, VERY TOUGH”

During her 12th Board Exams, which is the most critical moment in everyone’s life, Priya took a break from creating content to focus on her studies more. Although she still remembers how difficult it was for her to give up something she loves even though for a short while. But later, she discovered a unique quality that she possesses. “I realized later that my working ability increases when I’m handling multiple things at once,” she explains. “Now that I think back, I would’ve scored much more in my exams if I had the pressure of managing my studies along with the blog.”

Along with being real, she urges upcoming influencers to be consistent so that your audiences always have a reason to follow you and don’t be discouraged if you didn’t get the desired likes or comments. “Those are just numbers. What matters is having that genuine comment or feedback even if it’s just one person” She advises.
